DORIS A. MURPHY
Doris A. Murphy was born on August 6, 1935 in Jordan Valley, Oklahoma to James B. Cole & Alsey Myrtle (Garrison) Cole. She passed from this life on November 2, 2009 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 74 years, 2 months & 27 days.
Doris survived many obstacles during her life. At the age of 12 she was beaten by an intruder with a baseball bat and left for dead but surprised all by surviving. At the age of 26 she was diagnosed with cancer. This was at a time when doctors did not have many ways to treat it. She was given 5 years at the outside to live but again surprised everyone by living an additional 43 years. In 1967, she was in a car wreck where the driver of a pick-up never applied his brakes when he ran into the back of her car going 50 mph. In 1990, she slipped on some ice when leaving work and fell down the concrete stairs hitting her head and breaking her arm. In 2006, she fell and broke her hip. Doctors indicated at her age the odds of survival were quite low, yet she survived. In April of this year, she fell and broke her femur and in September, doctors found an anyuerism that should have already taken her, but had not. She was always a fighter. She began working in her chosen profession when someone with Mid-Continent Map Co. saw something in her and gave her a job as a draftsman. She continued in this vocation for more than 40 years until her retirement from the City of Tulsa in October, 2000. Her fifteen minutes of fame came in the late 1990's when one of the local television stations did a story about the "House Numbering Lady" for the City of Tulsa. Tulsa was growing and it was her responsibility to assign address house numbers for the developers. This was always one of the highlights of her life. She loved to read, especially Danielle Steele romance novels. She did not graduate high school due to responsibilities she had at an early age but she eventually received her GED. She passed the test in her first attempt in 1975 at the young age of 39. Other than her children, she considered this to be the greatest accomplishment of her life. She continued to harp to her children and grandchildren to stay in school.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Gerald M. Murphy, a daughter; Deborah L. Owens and 2 siblings; Jeanie & Boyd. She is survived by 1 sister; Deanie and husband Charles, of Broken Arrow, 1 son; Chris Clark and wife Lesa, of Basehor, KS, 9 grandchildren; Melissa, Jason and wife Stacey, Gary and wife Darla, Casy and husband Hamza, Shanna, Shaun, Chris, Audom and husband Daryl & Justin and wife Jamie, 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild on the way.
