BETTY ANDERSON SMITH

Betty Jean Smith, born January 22, 1929 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma passed quietly into rest on March 25, 2011. Born to Paul S. and Thelma Hughes Anderson, B.J. was a proud member of the Citizen Potawatomie Nation. She was raised in Oklahoma City and graduated from Capitol Hill High School. From 1952-1966, she worked for the Oklahoma City Public Schools serving as the Assistant to the Director of Personnel for 12 of those years. It was there that she met Thomas J. Smith with whom she would share the rest of her life.

Raising their family was her most treasured work. Through the years she also bred champion Chihuahuas, worked for veterinarian Dr. Ernest Wyatt, became a gifted porcelain doll maker and ran her own ceramic and porcelain doll making business.

She is survived by daughters Nancy and her husband Dr. Tom Shurley of Altus, OK, Janie Burroughs of Arlington, TX and Dr. Jill and her husband Jeff Hough of Tulsa, sons, Shawn and his wife Doretta of Alice, TX and Scott and his wife Debbie of Owasso, OK, 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Kathryn Spear, brothers Kenneth Anderson and Richard Anderson and her husband, Dr. Thomas J. Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. John's Hospital Hospice in Tulsa, OK or to the charity of your choice.
